The latest report from Canalys Apple’s iPhone lineup surpassed the premium segment during the first quarter of 2023. According to their estimates, the iPhone 14 Pro Max was the best-selling flagship, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 and iPhone 13.

31% of all shipments between January and March 2023 were for premium devices with an MSRP of over $500, the highest in the past five years. This particular segment was up 4.7% year over year, far outpacing the overall smartphone market, which was down 13.3% year over year.

The data revealed that the best-selling Android flagship for the first quarter was the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The Top 15 is mostly occupied by Samsung and Apple devices, which is understandable given the much wider availability of their premium devices.

For example, Google is selling the Pixel 7 series in 17 countries; Oppo is keeping the Find N2 in China, while Honor is still trying to catch up and was late to the party with an April launch of the Magic5 Pro.

Canalys analyst Nicole Peng said earlier this week that it will take some time for suppliers to get back on track and post a healthy increase in shipments. The forecast for 2023 expects demand to remain sluggish, but hopefully 2024 will see a return to growth.
